The Institute of Nuclear Technology is promoting the following research and investigations, wishing to contribute to further improvement of safety and reliability of nuclear power plants, in a scientific approach on the basis of on-site experiences, learning lessons from the accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi and operational experiences in domestic and overseas nuclear power plants.

1 Aging management research
In Japan, the maximum allowable service life of nuclear power plant is limited by law. Nevertheless, positive measures are still necessary against plant aging so that any nuclear power plants may be operated safely and stably. Aiming at proactive maintenance of nuclear power plants, we have been performing research into the mechanism of aging degradation, such as corrosion, fatigue and radiation damage in structural materials. We are also developing evaluation methods of the integrity of structures and components as well as techniques for monitoring and non-destructive testing.

2 Information analysis and feedback of nuclear power plant
To help assist safe and stable operation of nuclear power plants, we are performing overseas trouble information analysis and regulatory compliance updates in countries of Europe and the US. The resultant findings are then reported to electric power companies in Japan, and recommendations are made as necessary on the improvement of the safety of nuclear power plants.

3 Technical support for operation and maintenance of nuclear power plant
Taking the lessons learned from the accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant, we are ramping up efforts to promote research into nuclear disaster prevention and mitigation, such as on predictive methods of event progression and mitigation measures during a severe accident. In addition, we are performing researches on plant safety assessment to help improve safety in the operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants.
